New York City Traffic on a Friday Night

I remember the first time I went to NY City back in the mid 80's. A few friends and I decided to take a midnight road trip there on a Saturday in January. We arrived in NY early morning. I had fallen asleep in back and awoke to fogged windows and U2 singing on the radio ....I still haven't found what I'm looking for. As I cleared the windows to look out I was just awed by the size of these enormous skyscrapers and felt so insignificant. Much has changed since then, most noticeably the absence of the twin towers and all the events surrounding 911.

This recent trip Dov and I arrived about 8pm on a Friday night. Though I was just in NY this past August I felt anxiety, ever so briefly but YES I felt it. That August visit was much different as we were in Boston and decided to swing by the Big Apple just for the afternoon. I didn't have much time to think of where I was going because it was totally unplanned but this trip I knew I would be staying for three days in midtown Manhattan.

As we approached NY from NJ the traffic became more congested then slowed to a crawl, then just stopped and every so often it would inch up. It was here that I felt that apprehension of what if there was an attack or an emergency no way would anyone be able to leave this mess.

Instead of fighting the traffic or trying to maneuver through the tangle as some tried I just kicked back and waited for my turn to move up. We exited the Lincoln Tunnel and weren't sure if we were heading in the right direction. But it didn't matter we had to go with the flow of traffic, its impossible to pull over and very difficult to ask for directions, either from people not speaking English, not living in the city or just plain rudeness.

Cars, buses, trucks, cabs, motor cycles, people walking, riding bikes, more cars, more buses, more trucks, more cabs, more motor cycles, more people walking, riding bikes, people people people cars cars cars all over!!

Unless you experienced NY on a Friday night you just won't understand.

We were going the wrong way to the hotel according to the map Dov brought along so I did a U turn on a divided secondary road that was not as busy. But driving to the hotel every street, street corner, and sidewalk was crowded. People lined the sidewalks either walking or dining outside restaurants and coffee shops and of course the cars, buses and cabs everywhere.

Before arriving at our destination at the Roosevelt Hotel we needed to find a place to park the car. Having no luck finding a place under $200 for the three days that was close by we opted to have it parked at the hotel.

As we pulled up and stopped I marveled how the valet handled the madness. The traffic was unbearable, cars pulling in and out of the hotel, parking cars, opening doors, handing out parking passes, through out this craziness they kept their cool and went about their business as if it was a lazy day in small town America. To me it was just plain nuts!

We loaded our gear on the cart they wheeled out for us but to avoid the tip we took our baggage in ourselves. I'm sure they were not use to this as everyone staying at the Roosevelt must of had money and lots of it. Once entering the marbled lobby and viewing the swank decor I thought maybe I will enjoy this trip, I was right as I did.

The World Is Your Oyster When You Have a Passport Holder

It happens more times than you could count. You stash your passport in your pocket. You pull it out, only to have bits and pieces of paper and cardboard spilling out of your pocket alongside your passport. Or, you put your passport inside your bag, only to realize later on what an idiot you've been to keep something so important buried underneath mountains of souvenirs and unwashed clothing.

There is no doubt about it. When you travel, your passport is your lifeline. To the countries you enter, you are no one without it. This is why you need a passport holder. A passport holder lets you keep vital documents together in a place you are not going to lose. Passport holders are becoming more popular the world over as people travel almost as frequently as they get married.

A passport holder can potentially save lives through preventing cardiac arrest. Remember the bad old days when you'd have bits of paper and cardboard spilling out of every pocket? Or those days when your important travel documents would be buried somewhere underneath mountains of souvenirs and unwashed holiday clothing? Well, passport holders are here to solve all that, and to save your family the embarrassment of having their dirty holiday laundry aired out at the check-in counter in front of the people who will be sharing the same flight for the next 12 hours or so.

What Is a Passport Holder?

A passport holder is not a little man who stands about four and a half feet tall. It is not some airport personnel you pay money to for holding your passport as he screams, "des planes, des planes!" once he sees the big birds winging their way into the airport. A passport holder is a kind of wallet or folder type contraption used to hold together a variety of travel documents, such as passports, tickets, boarding passes, insurance papers, and the like. Passport holders keep documents together in one easy-to-see, easy-to-find, recognizable place. Think of it as a place to collect all those "other socks" of the travel documentation world!

Types of Passport Holders

The most common type of passport holder is a simple clear plastic slip that acts as a protective cover. It keeps your passport looking nice and pretty. However, it has no purpose aside from being decorative. If you're a serious traveller, you would need something more customized for keeping your nomadic life together!

You can go for a simple sleeve folder clutch-type passport holder where you simply slip your documents into the open pockets in each side, fold them up, and then let gravity take care of the rest. This kind of passport holder is great, until it gets tipped the wrong way or dropped on the ground. You can then watch your precious documents scatter all over the ground in the path of stampeding travellers, as the passport holder is knocked out of your hands. This kind of passport holder comes in airline regulation vinyl, which you get for free when you buy your ticket. It can also be made of expensive patent leather.

Passport Holders for Picky Passengers

To get the best value for your money and protect your passport better, get a passport holder that can hold, not just balance, your passport and your other documents. Some people use a money belt for this purpose. Some folks prefer what Americans call a "fanny pack" and the rest of the English-speaking world refer to as a "bum bag."

Essentially, a passport holder should be constructed from a durable, discreetly colored synthetic material, similar to those used in the construction of modern travel luggage. Additionally, your passport holder should be large enough to contain your passport, driver's license, and other essential travel documents. At the same time, it should be small enough so you don't have to lug it around using a wheelbarrow.

Whether it's Venice, Naples, or Milan you're going to, you would need a passport. Let your passport travel in style when you put it inside a passport holder.

Alex capacity New Bio ID Card Bill in WSJ "Required" for All Americans on The Alex Jones Show

ID Card for Workers Is at Center of Immigration Plan By LAURA MECKLER Customs and Border Protection agent Jesus Gomez checks a passport at the vehicle crossing at the San Ysidro Port of Entry in California. Lawmakers working to craft a new comprehensive immigration bill have settled on a way to prevent employers from hiring illegal immigrants: a national biometric identification card all American workers would eventually be required to obtain. News Hub: Worker ID Card Spurs Controversy 3:27 Lawmakers working to craft a new comprehensive immigration bill are proposing a new national biometric ID card that would be required of all US workers. WSJ's Laura Meckler explains the proposal and the objections from privacy advocates. Under the potentially controversial plan still taking shape in the Senate, all legal US workers, including citizens and immigrants, would be issued an ID card with embedded information, such as fingerprints, to tie the card to the worker. The ID card plan is one of several steps advocates of an immigration overhaul are taking to address concerns that have defeated similar bills in the past. The uphill effort to pass a bill is being led by Sens. Chuck Schumer (D., NY) and Lindsey Graham (R., SC), who plan to meet with President Barack Obama as soon as this week to update him on their work. An administration official said the White House had no position on the biometric card. "It's the nub of solving the immigration dilemma politically speaking," Mr ...

Boston Attractions - Faneuil Hall Marketplace

Are you looking for something to do on the next bright and sunny day in Boston? I have just the thing for you. You should visit the Faneuil Hall Marketplace. Keep reading this article and learn about what makes the marketplace worth visiting and to learn what you should expect when you get there.

The Faneuil Hall marketplace opened up in 1976. At the time it was an original idea that was so successful and popular that it has since been copied around the country. It is a festival style marketplace where you can buy food, drinks and shop for a number of other products. There are over 100 different places to eat, to drink and to shop at the marketplace. You can find merchandise that is unique to Boston or you can find merchandise that you would expect to find at any mall in America. It is a good blend of the average and the unique so there is something for everyone. This is a very popular attraction so you should expect large crowds. This also serves to make it a great place to people watch or to just hang out with friends. Next time you are in Boston be sure to swing by the Faneuil Hall Market. You will not regret it and will probably return often.

If you would like to visit the marketplace you can find it between North, Congress, and State streets. The market is open from 10 Am to 9PM from Monday through Saturday and from 12:00 to 6 PM on Sundays. Most of the bars and restaurants do stay open longer than the market however. Parking can of course be tight because of the popularity of the market but there are several garages available to you. Some of those include the Government Center Garage on Congress street and the markets garage on Atlantic Avenue.

Passport To Wealth - Secret Passport To Wealth Marketing Tricks

Do You Know The Truth Behind Passport To Wealth Marketing Systems?

Alright, lets drop the lame passport to wealth reviews that you've seen all over the face of the web. Time for some low down truths about how the passport to wealth marketing system works.

1) Automated Or Not?

One of the most touted ever logic behind joining Passport To Wealth is that its system is fully automated. Here is what really happens. You join as a business owner at $997 and get a replicated marketing website.

Then, you will market this website using the 'pretty' video presentations and get qualified leads. The no automation part is in fact the work required to generate those leads.

2) 2Up System = Great Wealth?

Perhaps you're totally convinced that the passport to wealth 2up system really works in your favor. We can agree it to some point.

The other point of the equation is that most people really do not like to "give up" their first harvest.

Think about it.

3) Should You Join A "No Way" Passport To Wealth Program?

My first answer is you should never join under anyone in any opportunity. This is because if you don't have the great will and desire to succeed you really are just buying hope.

Get to know the person whom you want to join in any program.

Your Next Step

Get to know people whom you can trust. Yes, even Passport To Wealth might help you but you should consider who is the person you will learn from. Ask yourself, "Do I Trust This Person?". Only you can answer this.

Illegal Immigrants: Stratford Station, London - Part 2

Another day in London with the UK's Border Agency.. as they watch people traveling to work they meet a suspicious looking man who turns out to be an illegal immigrant from Nigeria who doesn't seem to know his own date of birth. On this particular morning, the Border Agency made seven arrests of illegal immigrants, including several from India and Pakistan. The fact immigration officers were able to just pull seven illegal immigrants off the street in one small area of London in a few hours is quite worrying and shows the scale of the problem. Of the seven arrests, six were given temporary release but failed to report to back to the police station and are listed as absconders. This is a common pattern you see over and over again when it comes to illegal immigrants. It illustrates clearly that our present immigrant controls are failing. Here's how it's failing: An illegal immigrant is picked up and denies having a passport. Without a passport they know they cannot be detained in prison and deported from the UK. Once arrested and charged with being an illegal immigrant, they are released by the police subject to their agreeing not to work and to report to the police station each week until their documents and passports are ready for them to be deported. Naturally once they are released they are never seen again and they just move on to a different area. They have nothing to lose by absconding. Since these individuals don't legally exist here, they don't pay any taxes and ...

Submission (Part 1) Written By Ayaan Hirsi & Directed By Theo van Gogh

'Submission' Part 2 never happened because the person who directed this film (Theo Van Gogh) was murdered in public & a letter was pinned to his chest by use of a dagger. The creation and expression of this video costed him his life. Ironically, the act of violence & murder of Theo Van Gogh and the death threats against Ayaan Hirsi Ali gave this film exposure all around the globe. _____________________________________ ABOUT SUBMISSION The film's title 'Submission' is a direct translation of the word "Islam" Submission is a 10 minute film in English written by Ayaan Hirsi Ali & directed by Theo van Gogh. The short film was broadcasted in August 29, 2004. Ayaan Hirsi Ali (a former member of the Dutch House of Representatives for the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy). The film tells the story of 4 fictional characters played by a single actress wearing a veil, but clad in a see-through chador, her naked body painted with verses from the Koran. The characters are Muslim women who have been abused in various ways. The film contains monologues of these women and dramatically highlights three verses of the Quran (4:34 2:222 and 24:2) that authorize mistreatment of women, by showing them painted on womens bodies. On November 2, 2004, Theo van Gogh was assassinated in public by Mohammed Bouyeri, Moroccan muslim with a dutch passport. A letter stabbed through and affixed to the body by a dagger, linked the murder to Van Gogh's film and his views regarding Islam. After the ...

Passport Identity Theft: Don't Leave Home Without Knowing This

Your passport is one of the most important proofs of your identity. Many countries require you to carry you passport with you in order to enter or cross their borders. Identity thieves are well aware of the importance of passports, thus passports have become a one of their prime targets.

Authors including Frederick Forsyth (author of The Jackal) have used passport identity theft as a plot. In The Jackal, an assassin scours the cemetery for the grave of a child who was born around the same time. He then uses that name to apply for a passport. In the book, the story takes place in 1963 before the computer advancements of today. In today's world of computer, electronic data matching of records would make it much more difficult for an identity thief to apply for a passport since it is easier to match births and deaths.

But as many loopholes as the authorities close, identity thieves are still able to find ways to circumvent them. In a slightly different version of Forsyth's idea, identity thieves tried to use the identity of disabled individuals in New Zealand, assuming that it was unlikely for them to apply for a passport. Identity thieves believe that the "real" persons would never realize there was a passport issued in their name.

Because of the value of passports, there are black markets in many countries copying and reproducing passports. Another scenario is to steal real passports and then modify some of the information, such as inserting a different picture. These altered passports are often used by illegal immigrants.

Government officials have been combating passport identity theft by changing the passport design and publishing procedures for checking passports at border crossings. More time and money have been spent on this subject in recent years due to terrorist concerns. Some nations have begun to insert data chips in the passports of their citizens. Countries are also exchanging more information on people suspected of identity theft, details on modifying passports and improvements in passport checking procedures.

If you lose your passport while traveling abroad, contact your country's embassy immediately. There is a real chance your passport will be altered and misused and you don't want to be charged with a crime on foreign soil. You will be issued a temporary passport in order to continue your trip. This will take several day, with the local police investigating the theft.

You can reduce the possibility of having your passport stolen:

* When in a foreign country, if you keep your passport with you at all times, use a

money belt underneath your shirt. It's also a great place to stash most of your cash and other valuables.

* Never keep your passport in a bag or purse because they can be easily and quickly stolen.

* You can also leave your passport locked in the hotel safe. Actually, some countries require you to give your passport to the hotel so the police have access to inspect them at any time.

Guidelines For Correcting Or Changing Information in the US Passport

A passport is a personal identification accepted internationally. Therefore, after receiving your newly acquired passport or renewed passport, it is a must that you carefully look into the details. Make sure the information you provided are written correctly in your document.

The US Department of State is the agency that handles and provides passports to its citizenry. Any correction or changes in this document must undergo the guidelines and requirements they post. There are different and specific methods that must be followed in order to change or correct any information stated in the passport.

Correcting a typographical error or wrong information in the passport

Correcting a typo or any wrong information in the passport is possible. You must first fill-up the Form DS-5504 legibly in black ink and make sure all the information needed is correct and complete. Sign and put a date on the first page of the form. Submission of the form will vary.

If your passport was issued less than 90 days, mail the Form DS-5504 together with your US passport and any document that will support your request to the address stated in the form. If the passport was issued for more than 90 days already, submit the Form DS-5504 together with the US passport, documents supporting your request and two new passport photos. They offer this service free of charge.

Changing the Name

A change of name can be categorized into three: name change because of an error, name change if you are unable to support with documents your request and name change for eligible applicants. If you will just change the name because of an error, follow the instruction for correcting the typographical error.

If you are going to change your name and you cannot support your request through any court order or marriage certification, submit the following requirements in person at a Passport agency or Acceptance Facility: US passport, filled-up Form DS-11, 3 or more public documents that will show the use of your assumed name for 5 or more years and two recent colored photos. Certain fees will be charged to you.

If you changed your name due to a court order or marriage and the passport was issued for not more than 1 year, just submit through mail the following documents: US passport, filled-up Form DS-5504, a certified true copy of the court order or the marriage certificate and two recent photos. No fee will be charged on you.

If your change of name is due to a court order or marriage and you passport was issued for more than a year ago, just mail the following documents to the address provided on the Form DS-82: US passport, filled-up Form DS-82, a certified true copy of the court order or the marriage certificate and two recent colored photos. Inquire about the necessary charges.

Replacing your Limited US Passport

In replacing your limited passport book, two methods are possible. If your passport was issued not less than a year, just mail the following documents to the address provided by Form DS-5504: US passport, filled-up Form DS-5504, other documents specified by the passport services and two recent colored photos. No fee will be charged to you.

If your passport was issued for more than a year, mail the following documents to the address provided by Form DS-82: US passport, filled-up Form DS-82, certified copy of court order or marriage certificate and two recent colored photos. You will be charged a processing fee.

Additional Visa Pages

When your passport has only 2 to 4 visa pages left, mail the following documents to the address provided by Form DS-4085: US passport, and filled-up Form DS-4085. If you are requesting for a new passport book, submit a signed, written request and mail it with Form DS-82 or submit it in person by following the instruction provided by Form DS-11. There are no fees charged for this request.

The Teddy Boy in Britain

After the deprived years of the Second World War, in Britain a rebellious streak was showing in young people. This manifested itself in many ways, the most peculiar being a fashion for young men that was a throwback to the Edwardian era. The Teddy Boy was born.

In an effort to bring a little gaiety to their lives, young people started spending money on a fashion that really belonged to them. The first Teddy Boy suits were made in 1951 in London, but it was a few years before this bizarre style of dress found popularity throughout Britain.

Basically the Teddy Boy's garb consisted of tightly tapered high-waist stove-pipe trousers worn with thick soled square-toed shoes. The jacket was a long drape coat to almost knee length, with velvet lapels and padded shoulders. The favourite colour was black.

Often there was a double breasted waistcoat to set off the suit, together with a bootlace in place of a tie. These bootlace ties were clipped at the neck with a brooch bearing initials, a skull or similar motif.

The Teddy Boy's hair was worn long. Sometimes it flopped forward on the forehead in a jumble of greasy curls, or it was carefully blow waved to stick out in front like an elephant's trunk.

The "Tony Curtis" was also popular at this time. Alternatively the hair would be brushed back in various styles, such as the "Boston." Another much-worn style was the "D.A." so called because the hair was brushed back to resemble a "Duck's Arse."

The hooligan element - previously known as Spivs or Cosh Boys - took an immediate fancy to this new trend. Unfortunately, this led to "Teddy Boy" becoming a synonym for Juvenile Delinquent.

Even at the beginning of the 1960s, some six years after the zenith of Teddy Boy fashions, the Teddy Boy tag was still associated with teenage mischief makers.

In spite of the lavishness of grooming and dress flaunted by the Teds, there was still at that period in the 1950s a prevailing interest in sport. On Saturdays gangs of youths would congregate in station forecourts bound for a kickabout at an amateur football match.

Then in the evenings the Teds would make their way to the dance halls, but the dancing was still the dull perambulating called Waltz, Quickstep and Foxtrot.

Not having the inclination nor the nature to indulge in the dainty steps of ballroom dancing, the Teds shuffled about in their own lolloping manner.

Seeing this, enterprising band leaders - Ken Macintosh among them - decided they should do something about the shiftless grunting mass on the dance floors. And so The Creep was born.

The Creep was much too slow and dreary to last, but for a few months it appealed to the Teddy Boy populace. However, the faint beat of a new sound sweeping the USA was being heard in Britain.

With the rebellious streak of teenagers being exploited on cinema screens in quaint Hollywood dramas of Juvenile Delinquency, the Teds pricked up their ears to the new noise.

In 1955 an American film called Blackboard Jungle came to Britain. In shots from this, youngsters were seen bopping in their schoolroom to a background of a reedy voice and honking saxophone exhorting them to "Rock!" The voice was Bill Haley's and the song was Rock Around The Clock.

The Teddy Boy generation had found an anthem.

Vetting Tenants

Do I really need references for my prospective tenant?

"I know an honest person when I see one. Getting a professional tenant reference is just a waste of money."

Unfortunately these sentiments are no longer true. There are some very plausible people who make a profession out of 'scamming' unsuspecting landlords. They are polite, well turned out, appear well educated and to have good jobs. Unfortunately once in, these 'professional' tenants can make your life hell.

So follow these basic steps if you want to avoid being saddled with the 'tenants from hell'.

Essential steps

There are five steps that you can take to vet your prospective tenants. The first three are essential. The others you may wish to undertake depending on time and resources. They are as follows:

1. Credit referencing.

Referencing agencies are also used by letting agents. They carry out checks on the prospective tenant's credit worthiness and authenticate their personal details. These agencies normally offer various levels of service. You should at least opt for the basic package which will check the following:

* Electoral roll to verify current and previous address

* County Court Judgements (CCJ), bankruptcy and any court based voluntary financial arrangements to ascertain any poor credit history

* An affordability check to ensure that the tenant is likely to afford the rent on their stated earnings

* Validate the bank address and sort code given by status to ensure it is legitimate

* Check submitted details against stored data on file

This type of financial check is available online for between £12-25 and once the enquiry form is submitted the results can be e-mailed back to you immediately.

The most important information to come out of these checks is whether the applicant tenant has a CCJ. If they have this is bad news as it means that in the past a creditor has had to take them to court because of non payment. Often you will find that individuals are serial debtors and have a number of judgements against them. The general rule is 'don't touch them with a barge pole' as 99% of them will be bad news.

The other essential information that should come out of the information is that this should verify the address of the tenant and this should help you confirm their story and details.

Often the reference agency will provide a score of the tenants' suitability. The score tallies with a suggested course of action. Say anything above 1000 would suggest that the tenants are a low risk. Between 1000-750 the tenant may represent a moderate risk of default. Below 750 a high risk and strongly advise not having them.

These scores are useful supplementary guidance but I would caution of interpreting them too literally. There may be some categories of tenant where this system is inappropriate. For instance students may score very badly because they have a limited credit history and/or they move address frequently.

In these cases where it is hard to verify the credit background of your prospective tenant or they have a low score, consider using a guarantor if you are still keen to take them on. Don't use referencing in isolation; instead consider them with other sources of information to build up a picture of your tenants risk profile.

Finally, the verification process should involve an ID check. ID fraud is becoming an increasing problem. You therefore need to verify that your prospective tenants are who they say they are. Get them to show you some ID with a photo such as a passport or European style driving licence so that you can see their name and an identifying picture.

2. Employers reference

This should simply confirm the employment status of the tenant. Are they employed where they say they are? Importantly are they on a full time contract or is their temporary contract just about to finish, casting doubt on their ability to pay the rent in the future. It should also give you their salary which is useful in assessing the tenant's ability to pay.

You can calculate their affordability of the rent in relation to their salary by multiplying the monthly rent by 30. This gives an indication of the minimum salary that would support this level of rent. For example, a monthly rent of £1000 multiplied by 30 equals £30,000. If the applicant annual salary is £20,000, then you should start to question how they are going to afford the rent without sub-letting. Whilst the outcome of this shouldn't be taken as 'gospel', again it gives a useful guide.

3. Bank reference

These references are likely to be the most difficult and time consuming to obtain. In order to get one you will first need written authorisation from your prospective tenant to allow the bank to respond. The bank will then charge you a fee for their services, which at best is likely to be very vague. They will probably respond with uncommittal wording such as "we see no reason why the tenant will not be able the meet the rent".

This is hardly a thumping endorsement and probably means the tenant has no money in their account, but if we give them a huge overdraft in theory they could pay rent for a few months. Given all the effort and time involved and that the enquiry is only about a prospective tenant, my advice would be don't bother.

TOP TIP

Instead a much better solution is to simply get your prospective tenant to let you have their last 6 months bank statements. Sounds intrusive - well not really you are only trying to establish that the tenant can afford to pay the rent they say than can.

These statements provide an invaluable insight into the financial position of your potential tenant. Are they paid what they say they are? What are their regular outgoings, will they really be able to make their rent payments. Do they have any worrying habits, such as a gambling problem which could ultimately cause them to default on their rent. If they refuse then maybe they have something to hide, most good tenants won't even question it. All this information helps to build that risk profile we talked about earlier.

4. Landlords reference

Where the applicant is currently living in rented accommodation it is useful to obtain a reference from their landlord. I would suggest that you ask the following questions:

* How long has the applicant been a tenant of yours?

* What is / was the rent paid?

* Was the rent paid in full and on time each month?

* Were there any periods where the rent was in arrears? Is the rent currently in arrears?

* Has the applicant cared properly for the property and its' contents

* Would you accept the applicant as a tenant again?

The landlords reference, given that many landlords are private individuals is one reference that can be easily falsified by the prospective tenant. All they need to do is to give a friend's details instead. If you are suspicious or want to make very sure, phone this person up. You should be able to tell quickly if the details are genuine.

The other things about landlord references is that if a landlord has a bad tenant, there is a big incentive for them to give a misleading reference just to get rid of them. Given that as a prospective landlord; one of your primary concerns about a tenant is will they keep up to date with their rent. This is why getting the tenant to produce their bank account statements is so useful. One glance of these statements should be able to help you verify that they are indeed paying their rent each month.

On the same topic I would draw your attention to the dilemma faced by many letting agents in seeking references. I recently had a letter requesting a reference for a tenant of mine. The wording of this request was so vague that effectively it was all but meaningless. A letting agent on a 'finders fee' is primarily concerned with getting a tenant. They will therefore not always be looking too hard to find problems.

Finally, there are an increasing number of prospective tenants who were previously home owners having elected to sell up & rent. In their situation a current landlord's reference will not be possible. In this situation you should request copies of their last 6 months mortgage statements as evidence that they were not behind with their mortgage payments. If they refuse, maybe they are trying to hide something.

5. Personal reference

If a landlords' reference is sometimes a bit tenuous then a personal reference is not worth the paper it is printed on. Don't even bother with this.

Risk profile

Ultimately, in deciding whether to take on a tenant you must ask yourself 'how risk adverse am I?' This needs to be considered against the commercial needs to get a paying tenant. If you have positive results from the first three types of check; it is fair to say that these tenants represent a fair risk to most landlords. Research undertaken by the Residential Landlords Association shows that where no tenant checks are undertaken; landlords are 7 times as likely to end up taking court proceedings. In short - make sure you do it.

Before you get paranoid; you should remember that most prospective tenants are perfectly decent law abiding people who will occupy your property, pay rent and leave the property at the end of the tenancy as they found it. What you are trying to insure is that you filter out the small proportion of 'scammers' who will ultimately move on and find a landlord that is less prepared and less organised than you.

Turks and Caicos Islands: The Caribbean's Secret Beach Paradise

One of the Caribbean's best-kept secret holiday destinations, the Turks and Caicos Islands are ringed by white-sand beaches and set like jewels amid warm turquoise waters.

Located at the southeastern tip of the Bahamas, 575 miles south east of Miami, Florida, the Turks and Caicos Islands are a vacation paradise famous for their stunning water color, endless wide beaches, world-renowned snorkeling and scuba diving, humpback whale migration, deep-sea and bone fishing, as well as, all types of water sports, golf, shopping and cultural activities.

Fishing & Diving

The Turks and Caicos Islands are fortunate in having some of the only unspoiled reefs left in the Caribbean. With 1,000 square miles of coral reef, the Islands are well-known among scuba divers for spectacular wall dives, turtles, manta rays, humpback whales and the oldest known shipwreck in the western hemisphere.

The Turks and Caicos Islands are a year round bonefish heaven and deep-sea big-game fishing is awesome as well.

Beaches

For those visitors that are not fishing or diving enthusiasts, you can look forward to wondrous, lazy days of sun, sea and sand.

The Turks and Caicos Islands boast some of the most
exquisite beaches in the entire Caribbean. Grace Bay Beach on Provo where courting couples find the perfect setting for a wedding is a 12-mile-long stunner voted best beach in the world on two occasions by readers of Conde Nast Traveler.

Best of all is that you can find many deserted beaches, small secluded coves and bays, which provide sheltered areas to swim, snorkel, sail and explore without the crowds except a pelican or two!

The rich and famous have known this for years with a long list of celebrities slipping away to the secluded shores of the Turks and Caicos for endless days of quiet relaxation.

Bruce Willis and Keith Richards have homes here and Justin Timberlake, Penelope Cruz, Ashton Kutcher, Julia Roberts, Michael Douglas and many others have visited.

Accommodations

Whether you're a young single, a couple or parents with kids you're sure to find accommodations to suit your tastes and needs.

The Turks and Caicos Islands offer choices ranging from quaint inns to small boutique resorts, a few larger hotels with all inclusive options and luxury resorts with fantastic spas considered some of the best anywhere in the world. Renting a condo or private villa is also a popular option.

Many Islands To Explore

Providenciales is the most populated island with most of the hotels and tourist facilities, but Parrot Cay, Pine Cay, North Caicos, Middle Caicos, South Caicos, Salt Cay and Grand Turk are particularly alluring for those looking to get off the beaten path. On these islands you'll find tiny towns, small personable hotels and pristine solitude.

Cockburn Town on Grand Turk is the Island's capital with a truly fascinating, one-of-a-kind museum. Cliffs and ancient caves await your exploration on Middle Caicos and you can watch the annual humpback whale migration right from the beach on Salt Cay.

Quick Facts

The Turks and Caicos are officially English speaking with a population close to 30,000 people made up of both "Belongers" (citizens) and expatriates. Most live on the main tourist hub of Providenciales or "Provo" as it's commonly called. The official currency is the US dollar and major credit cards are accepted, as well as, travelers checks.

Traveling to the Turks and Caicos is typically more expensive than developed tourist destinations like Cancun or Nassau, Bahamas, but then that's typical of most Caribbean islands. However, the Turks and Caicos Islands are much less crowded and developed (for now) then most other Caribbean islands.

Known internationally as a leading tax haven and financial center for investments and business, tourism is still in the early stages. However, recent development trends are fueling fast growth in the Turks and Caicos economy and real estate market where condos and vacation homes are experiencing rapid appreciation.

Travel & Transportation

Direct flights from New York, Boston, Charlotte, Philadelphia, Atlanta and Miami make traveling from the United States easy, and allow visitors to be relaxing on the beach within a few short hours.

All US Citizens traveling by air to the Turks and Caicos Islands must have a valid US passport. Canadians can enter with a birth certificate and photo id.

Transportation is readily available through local agencies and major car rental companies at the airport and around town. It's best to book your rental well in advance especially if visiting during the peak winter season. Many resorts offer shuttle service from the airport. Taxis and small buses also serve the island.

Start Planning

The Turks and Caicos Islands are truly magnificent. If you want to get away from it all, you'll certainly enjoy lounging on the beautiful white sand beaches.

For more adventure, the numerous national parks, nature preserves, sanctuaries and historical sites give you plenty of options for unique and interesting excursions. Of course, the bone fishing, big-game fishing and scuba diving will have you coming back for more.

Plenty of inns, hotels and resorts are available perfect for young singles, couples or parents with kids. If you'd like to visit a Caribbean island that isn't crowded or over-developed then the Turks and Caicos are your best bet.

Alex Details The History of Staged Events to Usher in Global Dominance on The Alex Jones Show 2/8

[[ Conspiracy Fact: Every Major Terror Plot In US Was Contrived ]] www.infowars.com Paul Joseph Watson Prison Planet.com Saturday, March 6, 2010 The highly suspicious Pentagon shooting, which has been used as grist for the establishments aggressive smear campaign to portray dissent against government as violent extremism, is beginning to bear the hallmarks of almost every other major case we have studied where the authorities have not only had prior knowledge of the plot but have in fact facilitated it from beginning to end. The revelation that shooter John Patrick Bedells parents warned authorities that their son was missing, armed, and dangerous, echoes similar warnings that were given to officials prior to the Christmas Day underwear bomber attack, which is just one indication amongst a plethora that the Delta 253 incident was a false flag set-up. Just a brief reprisal of the last handful of major terror cases in the United States instantly reminds us that in every single instance the plot was artificially engineered by the federal government and then later seized upon, with the enthusiastic support of the corporate media, as justification for more funding, more power, and more authority to denounce critics of the war on terror and dissent against the state in general On January 27, the Detroit News reported how the State Department refused to revoke Umar Farouk Abdulmutallabs visa despite the fact that he was on a terror watch list and allowed him to board the plane ...

Getting a Passport Overnight

Even the well-prepared sometimes find themselves in need of a fast passport. Life circumstances sometimes dictate unexpected trips due to emergent events. Family deaths and work-related issues are the two main reasons that people need to obtain rush passports. Fortunately, it is possible to procure a passport quickly, as long as you're willing to pay a price.

The regular fee for obtaining a new or renewed United States adult passport (ages 16 and older) is $75. Passports for infants/children are $60. These fees are the same regardless of how quickly you need your passport. They are paid directly to the US Department of State. Additionally, all applicants are charged a $25 execution fee. This fee goes to the facility where you apply. Processing times for a standard application are about six weeks, though a lucky few get them faster. However, the only way to obtain guaranteed fast delivery on a passport is to pay an expediting fee. The quicker you need it, the more money you'll have to hand over.

Applicants who need a passport within hours should be prepared to pay two extra fees. The first is an expediting fee. It is $60, regardless of whether you need a passport within hours or a couple of weeks. This fee goes directly to the US Department of State and ensures fast processing at the government's end. On top of the expediting fee, you must pay an expediter fee. This amount is for the processing branch itself, and what you pay depends upon how quickly you need your passport. Both the expediting and the expediter fees are in addition to the initial application and execution fee. Applicants can receive a passport within a few hours for $299. An overnight passport will cost slightly less: $249. Those who can wait a little longer pay incrementally less. Payment of these fees guarantees delivery within the specified time frame.

Because 24 hr. passports are substantially more expensive, it is simply advised that every American citizen have a passport at all times. In fact, it is predicted that within a few years it will become another standard piece of ID, just like a driver's license. Many countries, such as in Europe, already require passports even for domestic flights and hotel stays. It's likely that the United States will be headed in a likewise direction in the years to come. Even if you aren't planning a trip, getting a passport now may save you hundreds of dollars in the event of an emergency. It's good for 10 years if you're over the age of 16 and five years for children under 16.

24 hr. passport applications can be processed anywhere that regular applications are accepted. This includes your local Post Office, immigration agency, and authorized outlets. Identification requirements for both regular and rush US passports are the same, and include:

*Proof of US citizenship. Your birth certificate satisfies this requirement. If you are applying for a US passport renewal you may simply present your old passport.

*Proof of identity. A driver's license, naturalization certificate, government or military ID card will fulfill this requirement. Your previous passport will also work.

In addition to proper identification, you must present two passport-regulation photos. There are specifications which must adhered to, so make sure your photographer is familiar with passport photo standards. Home-produced photos are not accepted.

It's probably a relief to know that you can obtain a passport quickly if you need one. However, even if you don't plan to travel in the near future, getting a passport is probably a good idea anyway. Be prepared for an emergency, and you may save yourself a lot of money in the process.

UK accent aphorism for across students

The UK government has introduced new legislation that makes it mandatory for all non-EU passport holders to have a certain level of English if they wish to come to the country to study the language. Officials say they are cracking down on possible abuses of the visa system, but the move has angered students and many of Britain's language schools who argue it could lose the UK revenue. Crossing the US Canadian Border by Land - Do I Need a US Passport?

The rules and regulations for crossing the US/Canadian border by land have changed over the years. It can be difficult to determine what kind of documentation (i.e. US passport), if any, is required for a routine, short-term US/Canadian border crossing. Knowing the facts before crossing the US/Canadian border by land will help save you time and trouble on your trip and lead to fewer delays at border patrol.

The US Department of Homeland Security, in cooperation with Canadian, Mexican and other Western Hemisphere country officials, has made a number of changes to border crossing regulations and requirements in recent years. The changes have been implemented in stages, with grace periods allowing some lenience for certain types of travel and travelers. The department has used media campaigns as well as word-of-mouth education to inform travelers of the most recent changes in regulations regarding crossing the US/Canadian border by land, which went into effect on January 31, 2008. These changes were made in anticipation of the full implementation of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative on June 1, 2009.

Current regulations for crossing the US/Canadian border by land state that all adult visitors (ages 19 and up) must present the following documentation at the border:

* A current, valid US passport OR
* One form of government-issued identification which bears a photo PLUS
* Proof of citizenship (i.e. birth certificate or naturalization certificate.)

Travel visas are not currently required for short term land travel across Canadian/US borders.
Children (ages 18 and under) who cross the border with a verified adult will need to have either a current US passport or documentation verifying citizenship (i.e. a birth certificate or naturalization certificate.)

When the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative becomes fully operational on June 1, 2009, all citizens over the age of 15 will be required to supply one of the following forms of identification when crossing the US/Canadian border by land:

* A valid US passport.
* Government-issued proof of identity with photo AND proof of citizenship.

All governments involved in the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative are strongly recommending that citizens apply for and carry a US passport when crossing the US/Canadian border by land. A US passport is the only universally accepted form of travel documentation. Carrying a US passport will greatly reduce your chances of being delayed at the border, whether crossing into Canada or back home to the United States. Travelers who do not possess a US passport may be looked upon with suspicion, even if other documentation is in order. Border officials on both sides reserve the right to detain travelers or refuse entry altogether if they feel that something is amiss. This is why the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is urging all citizens to obtain a US passport. In the end, it ensures smooth border crossings both for travelers and for border agents.

Find a Passport Application Form Online

It would be best for each member of a family to have passports before leaving for the airport for that vacation abroad. Whether the family member is renewing a passport, correcting data for it, or getting a passport for the first time, the passport application form can be found online and will not be extremely difficult to complete. An individual will either fill out From DS-11 or Form DS-82, depending on his or her situation.

Since these are documents for traveling internationally, the government places mandatory rules on the acquiring of passports. Even though Form DS-11 can be completed digitally, an individual will still have to make an in-person appearance at a designated government facility. All of the additional paperwork must also be brought to the office for verification.

An easy way for an individual to find out what facilities will perform these functions is to go online and search for a Passport Acceptance Facility near the individual's home. Most local post offices can perform these duties, but it would still be wise to check online, or if an individual does not have computer access, he or she should consider calling the post office. These places should also have the proper application should an individual not have Internet access.

Passport processing can take a decent amount of time, so individuals should consider doing this process far in advance. For those individuals who no longer have the option of completing the process far in advance, the government offer expediting services that will push the application through the process a little quicker. For those that really need the document quick, an independent expediting service can perform the duty in one day.

As well as the application, an individual will need to bring additional documentation to the facility of his or her choosing. The purpose the additional documents serve is to act as proof of an individual's citizenship and proof of an individual's identity. An individual will also need a recent photograph and a copy of the recent photograph.

One of the most used proofs of citizenship has been the birth certificate. Other proofs, such as a certificate of citizenship, can also be used. For a complete list of all acceptable proofs, go online and check the government's stipulations. For proof of identity, a driver's license will work. Again, other documentation will work, so it would not be a bad idea to go online and check.

Form DS-11 differs from Form DS-82 in that an individual filling out Form DS-11 will need to appear at one of the governmental facilities and the individual completing Form DS-82 will be renewing his or her passport via the mail. Both of these are passport application forms. Each form will ask basic things, such as name and social security.

Hackers Clone Elvis' Passport

"Hackers have released source code that allows the 'backup' of RFID-protected passports, although the tool can potentially be used to create fake or cloned documents. The Hacker's Choice, a non-commercial group of computer security experts, has released a video showing a cloned passport being approved by a security scanner at a Dutch airport. When the reader scans the passport, it is revealed to belong to one Elvis Aaron Presley, complete with picture. Reports of the hackers serenading security staff with 'Are You Clonesome Tonight' are unconfirmed."

Benefits of Having a Polish (EU) Passport

Since Poland's accession to the European Union in 2004, there has been an increase of interest among people of Polish descent in obtaining a Polish passport. Polish citizenship makes it possible for them to reside, study, own property and gain employment in the European Union countries.

As a Polish citizen, you can live and work in any of the EU countries and enjoy free public health care and education. You can also gain access to preferential investment loans, employment schemes and you don't have to stand in the "Others" queue at airports!

Confirmation of Polish citizenship can be daunting, as those who have tried doing it by themselves will tell you! While the general rule is that if you have Polish ancestors then you are already a citizen of Poland, there are any number of reasons why your citizenship may have lapsed. This is why the Polish government requires you to confirm your citizenship before you can apply for your Polish passport.

Do you think that confirming your Polish citizenship is simply a matter of getting in touch with the Polish government? Think again! Confirmation of Polish citizenship can be challenging, frustrating and time consuming.

Confirmation of citizenship is an administrative and not a legal process so don't get sucked in by lawyers who will charge you an arm and a leg for the simplest of tasks.

The key to success is to check whether you are eligible in the first place, gather relevant documentation and submit it in the right way, to the right department in Poland. It requires your commitment and full cooperation but if you leave it to the experts, the journey, whilst long and at times frustrating, will lead to a successful conclusion.

How do you tell whether you are eligible?

Unfortunately, the answer to the question above isn't simple. The Polish citizenship legislation, whilst very liberal and generous, is also quite complex. This is why establishing eligibility is essential at the very beginning of the process so that your application doesn't end in refusal, frustration and loss of time and money.

Some of the factors that the Polish government takes into consideration include the ancestors' year of birth, nationality of the second parent/grandparent, foreign military service, acquisition of foreign citizenship, conscription age of the father/grandfather of the applicant, holding of public office but most of all, available documentation proving all of the above. In some cases, because of the Polish legislation, siblings from the same parents may or not be eligible, depending on their gender and year of birth.

The onus is on the applicant to provide sufficient evidence and proof of citizenship and, as a general rule, the more documents issued by the Polish government are submitted, the better your chances. Other documents, such as International Identity Cards, Refuge Cards, Red Cross documentation and archival documents from Australia can also be accepted.

The fundamental part of the process is to gather information and all available documents, and check whether you are actually eligible. Some families may be reluctant to explore their past, as many of them are victims of trauma so it is important to treat their stories and lives with respects.

Obtaining a Polish passport is a 2 step process:

1. Confirmation of Polish Citizenship

File containing your family's documents proving your ancestry needs to be put together. Everything has to be prepared in the Polish language, then submitted for assessment by the authorities in Poland. Most applications are processed within 12 months from the day of lodgment, though some do take longer.

2. Application for Polish Passport

To apply for your Polish passport, you will need your certificate of Polish citizenship and your Polish birth certificate (yes, even if you were not born in Poland!).

How To Get Express American Passports Faster

Do you need a passport issued to you in record time? The good news is that there are express American passports services that are able to help you. By using these services you can have the passport within 48 hours and be ready to travel without pacing out by the letter box for the postal delivery person to arrive.

When you use a passport service to help you, they can ensure that your passport is processed within 24 hours and then sent to you through an overnight postal service. This means that you will have the passport within 48 hours. There are requirements that you need to know about and have ready so that you can ensure there are no processing delays. When you use the service, they will ensure that everything is filled out correctly.

A 24 hour processing, is the quickest option that is available in the United States. The normal processing time for a US passport is estimated at eight weeks. Therefore you can see that the express processing option is a very useful choice when you have limited time before the dates of your travel arrangements.

The biggest thing that slows down passport processing is errors being made on the forms. The passport service can help you to ensure that all your forms and paperwork are done correctly, which will ensure that your passport is delivered as quickly as possible to you. When you submit the application, you will get a case number, which you can use to contact the service at any time and make enquiries and also track the processing and shipment of the passport.

There are various types of passports that you can have processed through these services including: new adult and child passports, a replacement for a lost, stolen or damaged passport, additional pages and a passport name change. There are usually different fees that are charged on the different kinds of passports. You will also have an extra fee that is charged above the usually passport fee for producing it more quickly for you.

The different forms and documentation that are required for a passport depend on the kind of passport you are requesting and on your own circumstances. For example, the documentation that is needed for a US born citizen is different to that required of one that has been naturalized. Your passport service is able to support you with filling in the forms and getting everything filled in correctly the first time.

If you by chance are missing some of the essential documentation, then your passport service will be able to help you with organizing new copies. The passport cannot be processed and produced without presenting this documentation by law. You can request the documents online however, without having to wait a long time and go in person.

Looking to Get a Passport, Check Online For Details

Acquiring a passport will not be as easy as walking through a park on a sunny day, but it is not as difficult as most individuals assume. To get a passport, an individual will need to go through a painless process of proving citizenship and similar things. A quick search online will provide all the guidelines necessary for this process.

Passports are forms of identification mainly used for traveling abroad, but sense they are a form of identification, they can be used for other reasons, as well. This is one reason why it would not necessarily be a bad idea to get a passport, even if an individual is not planning a trip abroad anytime soon. The trip will come at some point and passports will take a few years to expire.

When the time comes, the proper paperwork will need to be completed and submitted to the proper governmental facility. Individuals who are getting a passport for the first time will need to complete part of the process in-person, for security reasons. To find the closest facility, search online.

Before an individual appears at the government facility, he or she should organize all the documentation needed for the passport process. For instance, an individual needs to prove his or her United States Citizenship. This can be done with a birth certificate or with other forms of proof. For a complete list of the acceptable proofs of citizenship, check the government's Web site.

Once an individual has proved his or her citizenship, the individual will also need to prove that he or she is whom he or she is. This means, the individual looking to get a passport will need to present current primary identification. A driver's license, still valid, will work for this part of the process. The individual who does not have a driver's license should not worry, because there are several other forms of acceptable present identification.

The next step involves photography, so get ready to smile and show those teeth. People will need to present two identical pictures for the passport process. There are other specifications for how big the pictures need to be, so for all the guidelines and stipulations, ask a local government official trained in the matter or go online.

Unfortunately, an individual will need to pay some fees in order to complete the process. There are the fees for the normal process, but if an individual needs his or her passport quicker, the government offers an expedited service that can complete the process quicker. If that is still not quick enough for some individuals, there are private companies that offer the quickest possible expediting service.

Static Caravans, a Different Type of Holiday

Caravanning like it or not has it's connotations, TV programmes like Top Gear cast images of old folk cluttering up the motorways with their mobile homes dragging behind their cars, in a recent episode the team even managed to nearly burn a campsite to the ground. Caravanning certainly has a bad image in the UK at the moment but still people in their thousands go on holidays in the UK in their army of caravans.

For those who don't want to be clogging up the highways and byways you can opt for static caravans, static caravans are typically much larger than conventional caravans and as such can accommodate larger family groups. The fact that they're larger means that there is more space and more chance of getting a decent night's sleep!

Static Caravans are normally found on dedicated land in holiday parks, these parks are normally near beaches and other tourist hotspots so you won't have to wander far for something to do or eat, other locations include some countryside farmers may have some caravans on their land for rent if you like the idea of being woken by the cockerel and the scenic views of vast farmland. Whilst you can buy your own holiday home, which may mean you pay rental costs for your space on dedicated land many people rent them much like a hotel room.

In fact, considering the extra space you get and that static caravans cost a lot less to maintain and run you will find that the cost of renting a static caravan considerably undercuts the price of a conventional hotel. Cheap Holidays at caravan sites are easily achieved compared to self-catered hotels, holiday cottages and hotel rooms for families.

You aren't going to be Roughing it on a static caravan holiday either, most static caravans now come with hot and cold running water, electricity mains and other home comforts that make the experience of caravan holidays much more appealing than the image they have had in the past. So for your next holidays consider caravanning as it's an affordable comfortable experience which will leave you pleasantly surprised.

7 Great Staycation Ideas and Tips

You don't have to look very far to know that times are tough right now. People in America and other countries are feeling the pinch. High gas prices, dwindling home equity, and even electricity prices are just some of the reasons travelers are turning toward a more affordable way of getting away for a much needed vacation break.

It's called a "staycation" and it's the perfect alternative to stressful, expensive travel in a tough economy. This article will give you 7 great ideas for a fun and affordable getaway!

It's a way of enjoying an adventure where you live. It's pitching a tent in your own back yard, or even taking a relaxing weekend adventure to a place in your own state that you've always wanted to see, but never got around to it.

Many families are finding that they are having just as much enjoyment staying close to home having a staycation, than taking an expensive trip hundreds or thousands of miles away. The staycation is where it's at!

So What Are A Few Great Staycation Ideas and tips?

1.Anything that gets you out of the house. Anything that requires no chores, no making the bed, no pulling weeds, and no arguing with airline reps or travel agents. A staycation is a vacation without the hassle!

2. Check your chamber of commerce website or call your state or city's tourism department for upcoming special events and a list of local attractions like water parks, or rodeos.

3. Take a day tour of your city's downtown area. Have you ever seen the movie "Ferris Bueller's Day Off?" Ferris and his two friends took a staycation! Ponder this direct quote from the movie: "The question isn't 'what are we going to do today', the question is 'what AREN'T we going to do today".

Ferris and his friends dined at the most expensive restaurant in Chicago, they test-drove a very fast vintage automobile, visited the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, attended a baseball game, admired the City from the observation deck of the Sears Tower, went to a local parade, and then enjoyed a relaxing dip in a Jacuzzi, then later a swim in the pool. All in one day.

4. Wherever you decide to go, take your camera or camcorder with you. Some of the most memorable things happen when you least expect them, and a small camera won't take up a lot of space, and can capture those special moments.

5. Take a little time to plan where you want to go, and when you'll return. Share this information to relatives or neighbors so they know when you're due back, and they know where you are.

6. If you're the outdoor type, plan your staycation where there are many local attractions like lakes, rodeos, interesting places to shop, and interesting things for the whole family to do.

7. Plan to stay over on your staycation? Consider renting instead of checking into a pricey hotel. It's more affordable renting a home or renting a cabin instead of booking a hotel. You'll get much more enjoyment, more freedom, and more value for your money.

As you can see, there are lots of things to do right in your own back yard. A little planning is all it takes to have lots of fun and become a tourist in your own home town!

Response by Tom McClintock : Tells Calderon OBEY America's Law or Shut Up!

Rep. Tom McClintock's discourse for Mexico's President Calderon to OBEY America's Law and to SHUT UP otherwise! ..... Thank you Mr. Speaker: I rise to take strong exception to the speech of the President of Mexico while in this chamber today. The Mexican government has made it very clear for many years that it holds American sovereignty in contempt and President Calderon's behavior as a guest of the Congress confirms and underscores this attitude. It is highly inappropriate for the President of Mexico to lecture Americans on American immigration policy, just as it would be for Americans to lecture Mexico on its laws. It is obvious that President Calderon does not understand the nature of America or the purpose of our immigration law. Unlike Mexico's immigration law -- which is brutally exclusionary -the purpose of Americas law is not to keep people out. It is to assure that as people come to the United States, they do so with the intention of becoming Americans and of raising their children as Americans. Unlike Mexico, our nation embraces legal immigration and what makes that possible is assimilation. A century ago President Teddy Roosevelt put it this way. He said: "In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this ...
