Australia - One of the Best Places to Live

The Land Down Under where kangaroos and koala bears roam in the Great Outback, where Crocodile Dundee and the aborigines hunted for crocs and other animals, that is Australia. The legend of Ned Kelly still evokes memories of the outlaws that once roamed Australia's landscape. A truly unique country that should rank as one of the best places to live, Australia is the only single country to occupy an entire continent.

Formerly and initially settled through penal transportation in the colony of New South Wales, its population grew and new areas were explored until another five largely self-governing Crown Colonies were established during the 19th century. Since it became the Commonwealth of Australia, it has maintained a stable liberal democratic political system.

The primary basis of Australian culture has been Anglo-Celtic, although distinctive Australian features soon arose from the country's unique environment and the pre-existing indigenous culture. Over the past 50 years, Australian culture has been strongly influenced by American popular culture (particularly television and cinema), large-scale immigration from non-English-speaking countries and Australia's Asian neighbors.

The vigor and originality of the arts in Australia-literature, cinema, opera, music, painting, theater, dance, and crafts-have achieved international recognition and has been one of the reasons why people like to visit or live here permanently. Australians, being highly visual people, have various state art galleries that have strong collections of Australian and overseas artworks that are highly attended by Australians.

Maintaining an active tradition of music, ballet, and theater; many of its performing arts companies receive public funding through the federal government's Australian Council. Not only does it foster the art of dance, it also raves its production of great actors including Nicole Kidman, Mel Gibson, Cate Blanchett, the the late Heath Ledger and many others who have gained success in Hollywood and overseas.

If you are the sporty type, you will surely enjoy living there as sport plays an important part in Australian culture, assisted by a climate that favors outdoor activities. ; At an international level, Australia has strong teams in cricket, field hockey, netball, rugby league, and rugby union, and performs well in cycling, rowing, and swimming. Viewing televised sports is popular; the highest-rating television programs include the summer Olympic Games and the grand finals of local and international football competitions.

Australia has really grown into a highly developed country with many opportunities to offer to a prospective migrant. It has created a landscape that will fully satisfy anyone who has an appetite for culture and arts and adventurism.

Your Best Choices For High Paying Overseas Jobs

So your not one of those people who are content to work at the lumber mill in their home town for the rest of their life. One option that you have to get your butt out of Dodge is find yourself a high paying overseas job and believe it or not they are currently available.

Get Your Passport

The first thing that you are going to need to do is get a passport or you aren't going anywhere. By the way, if you owe any back child support then you won't be seeing your passport until you pay it off. So assuming that you have your passport then it is time to begin your search.

Offshore Drilling Platforms

Getting a job in the petroleum industry is one idea that you might consider. If you can handle being stuck out on an offshore drilling platform for weeks on end then you may have what it takes. Even if you have no previous experience, they are always looking for "bolt tighteners" and "guage watchers".

Great Pay and Great Food

You have to be able to pass a drug test and be able to get along with others but if you think that you have what it takes then check online. You may be interested in knowing that you get paid for every day that you are out on the platform and the buffet style dining is great.

Private Security Work

If you have previous military experience then you may want to consider private security work in Iraq or Afghanistan. Granted its not for the tender hearted but it does pay well and there are jobs waiting to be filled. Right now there are over 200,000 private foreign security workers in Iraq alone so it is a booming business.

Definitely Not Glamor Jobs

It's a fact that a lot of these and other similar high paying overseas jobs are not glamor work and they can be dangerous. However, on the flip side, thats precisely why they pay so well and are currently open for the taking even in these bad economic times.

An Adventure to Quincy

On our first day in Massachusetts we (Peg and I and dear friend Al Burrage) had a council of war and planned where we wanted to go and what sites we wanted to see. Peg's main concern was to see Quincy, Massachusetts. Ever since she had seen the mini-series on televsion based on John Quincy and Abigail Adams (and read the books of course), and attended a history class with her mom at a local community college, Peg has wanted to visit the Adams' homes. Visiting Quincy became our number one goal.

"Just minutes south of Boston awaits one of New England's most captivating destinations, the City of Quincy ("quin-zee"). Called the 'City of Presidents' and 'Birthplace of the American Dream', Quincy is the birthplace of the second and sixth U.S. Presidents, John Adams and his son, John Quincy Adams. Rich in historic treasures, Quincy's impressive past remains vibrant today as the city lays claim to an exciting future."

Although our number one goal was to visit Quincy, Massachusetts and visit the home of John Quincy Adams and Abigail, when we are in West Dennis on Cape Cod, has led our immediate goal was lunch. We have seen many bars and restaurants that looked interesting, but a closer examination we found them to be closed. A dinner for two, including lobster advertised for $ 16.95. I parked the car and walked to the restaurant just a sign that their opening hours are shown in 4.00. I cried when they closed the door.

Returning to the carI saw a Brazilian restaurant, Terra Brasili's. They advertized a lunch buffet. We walked in to investigate. The buffet looked inviting. Peg decided to pay for her buffet by the weight, while Al and I decided to try the full buffet for only $13.99. I was a little familiar with dinner from South America. On a trip to Seattle we discoverd the Buenos Aires Grill, where we have dined three times now.

After serving ourselves side dishes and salads, we were able to choose our meats. Since Peg was paid for the weight, could only go into the kitchen, once for a cut of lamb. Al and I a "Yes" and "no" were card to display next to our place dishes. Until the card read "Yes" to continue the cook would bring skewers of meat and cut sections of the table. Our problem was only with the lamb. It 'been exaggerated for our tastes. But the tenderloin, rump roast, pork loin, bacon wrapped chicken breast and sausage, all cooked to perfection. Beefwas all served moist and rare. All said, "I've died and gone to meat heaven." For about fifteen minutes I joined him there.

After lunch we drove to the Adams National Historic Site. Peg signed up for the two hour tour. Al roamed around the gardens, and I put the seat back in our car and took a nap. The historical site was beautiful, and I did enjoy what I saw.

"Located just eight miles south of Boston, this site commemorates the public careers and literary contributions of John Adams, second president of the United States and four generations of his family, including John Quincy Adams, sixth president of the country. It 's the onlyplace in the nation, where the story of two presidents of their birth to their last resting place may be told.

The park is about 13 hectares and has 11 historic buildings, including two modest homes that the proposed salt field oldest presidential birthplaces in the United States. Start your visit here. John Adams was born innorth house in 1735, and some 75 yards away to the south, stands the house where in 1765 he brought his new bride, Abigail Smith. Their son, John Quincy Adams, was born in that house in 1767.

John Adams and his family were living in the second house when he drafted the Massachusetts Constitution, the forerunner of the U.S. Constitution, and this is where Abigail wrote many of her famous letters during the Revolutionary War, reminding her husband to 'remember the ladies'."

The family's mansion with its beautiful gardens is the start of the tour. Known as the "Old House," John Adams bought this dwelling from the Vassal-Borland family in 1787 and moved in shortly afterward with his family. The Old House was home to four generations of the Adams family: two presidents, statesmen, authors, and scholars. It remained in the family until 1946, when the Adams Memorial Society donated the house, along with its contents and grounds, to the federal government.

While peacefully rocking on the porch of the mansion and waiting for Peg to finish her tour, I received a call from a client, Harry and David, the gourmet condiment people. We laughed and talked a while . . . and I promised to eat three lobsters during the trip for my contact. It was difficult, but I did.

"The Old House holds a vast collection of decorative arts, objects, furnishings, and memorabilia acquired over nearly 150 years by different family members at various times. Adjacent to the Old House is the Stone Library, which was constructed in 1870 by Charles Francis Adams, John and Abigail's grandson.

Considered this country's first presidential library, today the beautiful building houses 14,000 volumes accumulated by several generations of the family."

Looking in my rearview mirror I saw Peg get off the trolley and walk towards the car. She was tired, however I was refreshed. We left the historical site and headed to Harbor Express, which is next to the site of the U.S.S. Salem. The USS Salem CA-139 is now the worlds only preserved heavy cruiser. She is moored at her birthplace, the former Fore River Shipyard.

"Ordered by the US Navy on 14 June, 1943, USS Salem (CA 139) was laid down on 4 July, 1945 at the Bethlehem Steel Company's Quincy Yard in Quincy, MA and launched on 25 March, 1947. She was commissioned at the Boston Navy Yard on 14 May, 1949.

U.S.S. Salem served a distinguished 10 year career as flagship of the US Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean and the Second Fleet in the Atlantic. During her career she served as host to such notables as the US Ambassador to Spain, John D. Lodge; the Honorable Thomas S. Gates, Undersecretary of the Navy; Admiral Arleigh A. Burke, USN, Chief of Naval Operations; the Shah of Iran; the President of Lebanon and the King and Queen of Greece.

Although Salem never fired her mighty guns in anger, her very presence served as a stimulus for peace during those troubled times that came to be called the Cold War. She served as a Lady of Diplomacy, rather than as a means of exerting brute force."

Before Al and I were kicked off the cruiser, we stepped inside one of the main turrets. I can't imagine the massive damage that must have been done to inner ears of anyone inside the main gun like that. There is even an alarm bell inside. When that went off it had to deafen anyone inside. These guns fire eight inch shells weighing about 240 pounds a distance of up to 18 miles. It was fun turning some of the controls inside the turret, but during a time of war I bet the walls seemed to get closer and closer. I could almost feel the pressure . . . and we still had the door open. We said goodbye to a friendly volunteer working on the deck (the volunteers are building a haunted ship for Halloween to raise money for the Sea Scouts).

We stepped onto the gangway and were surprised to see a German submarine sitting next to the Salem. Boarding the cruiser all our attention was focused on the heavy cruiser. It was a shock to see a two man submarine. I wasn't even aware that the Germans had such a thing during World War II. I knew the Japanese did, but I didn't know about the Kriegsmarine.

We walked all around the sub and when I got to a computer I checked out information on the internet about the mini-submarine, which would have carried two torpedoes. During WW II the German Navy constructed a very small submarine, designed for two crewmembers. The general term for this variable U-Boot "seal", the seal means. The technical equipment for the small U-boat was almost the same as that of larger-size boats. In addition to the boat in Quincy, you can visit a museum technician at Monaco Munich: Deutsches Museum. Most of the "seal" the survivors and the Association of Driver seal - SEAL-The Association of Sailors. Klaus Mattes wrote an interesting book The seals on the technical issues and the operations of Germanmini-submarine.

"The U-5075, a training kleinst-u-boot, was brought to the US for testing and evaluation in 1945. Then parts of it (the periscope, passive sonar and torpedoes) were removed for further evaluation. Our "075" was then put on display at the Groton Submarine Base (SuBase), in front of the administrative building. It sat there for about 50 years being ignored and neglected. Then it was moved to the USS Nautilus Museum just outside the main gate of the SuBase. In 1997 it was As a marine survey (an occupational injury / damage assessment). A few years later, our museum in Quincy received the seal. This was necessary because the Nautilus Museum, the space of the estate so that's the U.S. Navy 50 foot X-1 Four-man U-boat could display. About The X-1 must be restored. "

Al and I played with a gun station on the pier and a mine. Although I have my shoes, I could not work in the mine. It 'a Jeep was there too, but had no seats,This has been sitting a bit 'uncomfortable. Al and I have come to believe our games, and returned to the car. Peg was a bit 'grumpy. Had only a short nap. Peg is expected to be gone for hours. The cruiser was actually closed, so we only played for half an hour. . . and that was part of the descent control of the ferry the next day for Boston.

We really enjoyed our day in Quincy, and the next day we really enjoyed our day in Boston, but if you get theopportunity to return to Massachusetts I think we will stay in Quincy for several days and take the ferry to downtown Boston. That way, we can enjoy both Boston and Quincy. It will also stretch our budget by staying in Quincy rather than the higher priced hotels of Boston.

Sometimes There is No Other Choice But to Use Expedited Lost Or Stolen Passport Replacement Services

When a trip is coming up or actually happening, there is nothing worse than the realization that your passport has been stolen or is lost. It is bad enough when the trip has not yet started, but is right around the corner. It is even worse when someone is in a foreign country and has no documentation to prove that they are indeed a US citizen. It is times like this that call for expedited lost or stolen passport services.

If a passport is lost or stolen, how the situation is handled depends on where the traveler is. If the person is still on U.S. soil, everything can be handled rather quickly and without great expense. If the traveler has already gone abroad, everything changes, but it can still be taken care of. As long as you know what to do, there is no need to panic.

From the moment the passport is discovered to be missing, it is important that the passport holder jumps right into action. A phone call to the State Department should be the first move to make them aware the passport has indeed been lost or stolen. They can then do what they have to on their end to make sure that it is not used for illegal purposes.

In order to get a hold of the State Department, the passport holder must call their toll free number (877-487-2778) and report what happened. After they have done that, they can go to the website and download the DS-64 form. This is the form that must be filled out in order to get a replacement passport.

The DS-64 form will have to completed and turned in along with a new passport application. The process itself is the same as the process to get a new or replacement passport from this point forward and all fees are also the same. As long all forms are filled out properly, the time frame to get the new passport should be the same as if they were getting one for the first time.

Realizing that a passport can be lost or stolen at an inopportune time, there are passport expediting services that can be used to make everything happen quicker. Just like the expedited services for a new passport, lost or stolen service cost $60 to have it back in about three weeks. If that does not make things better, there are quicker services that are available for a higher fee.

If the person is already abroad, the process changes just a bit. The citizen will have to go the local US Embassy or Consulate and let them know what happened. If they have copies of all of their documents, they should bring them with them. At this point, the representative will let them know what has to happen and guide them through the process.

An Expedited Child Passport Can Save the Day

Parents can sometimes get caught in the trap of thinking that their small child is immune to the law and that they do not have to worry about silly things like passports. If there is an international family trip planned in the near future, that philosophy is going to have to be rethought. However, there is no need to hit the panic button, because an expedited child passport is all that is needed.

Just because they are a child, does not mean that there are not travel laws that pertain to them. Any family that is getting ready to travel aboard would do well to get on the Internet and do some research on passport rules and regulations. For the record, anyone traveling abroad needs to have a passport.

While there is one set of rules as they pertain to adults and there are specialty laws that pertain to children. One of the concerns of authorities is that a parent will unknowingly flee the country with a child. This is why both parents must sign a consent in order for the child to be able to get their passport. Doing this gives a little more reassurance that both parents know about the travel, even if the child is only traveling with one parent.

This special passport law means that an additional step has been added to the process, but other than that, the process is pretty similar to adults. Once the consent forms have been signed, the application process will go as a new passport application would. Just make sure that the consent form is properly done so that there will be no snags as the process moves forward.

The first step for a child at that point, just as it would be for an adult, is to get a valid passport photo taken. Because of the rush, it is probably best to utilize the one-hour photo shops that do passport photos. Let them know specifically that the photo is for an express passport and they make it the proper size.

Before the application can be submitted, the dual consent form has to be properly filled out and signed by both parents. If the parents are divorced or living in separate cities, this can sometimes cause a problem, especially if expedited service is needed. This is actually the cause at times for the expedited service as it takes both parents so long to get the forms signed.

A normal passport will take about 6-8 weeks to get back. If the time frame that is left in inside of that window, the parents are going to get stuck paying a fee of $60 to have the passport back within three weeks. There are other services that can be provided at a higher cost if that time frame is still not quick enough.

Undertaking the Issuance of a Rush Passport

Undertaking the issuance of a rush passport generally means that somebody traveling on business of an urgent nature needs a new or replacement passport. Whatever the reason for such a hurry, it's a fact that many people do need passports in a rush these days. And fortunately, there's normally a number of different ways for people in a hurry to get them.

Naturally enough, with the rise of Internet, businesses have sprung up that will aid in the expedited processing of such passports, even to the point of getting them to a person the next day. Given this, it's no surprise that many people, rather than traveling to a government passport agency or service center, use them. Others, though, prefer to do everything on their own, and it's possible to do so.

In this case, it'll be necessary to head to one of the government's passport agencies or service centers. There are a number of them located in the bigger cities or regions around the country. For example, a large center exists in Chicago, Illinois. Other such centers can be found on either coast, with California hosting two of them (one each in San Francisco and Los Angeles).

Those who need passports in a rush and who reside in the eastern part of the country can also avail themselves of centers located up and down the seaboard, including in New York City, Miami, Boston and Washington DC. There is a toll-free number the State Department lists on its passport website. Use it to make an appointment before bringing an application to one of these service centers.

As far as fees are concerned, when it comes to getting same day or quick-issuance passports, expect to pay up to $300, with another $60 if an additional citizenship check is needed. Also, it'll be necessary to show up with the correct passport application, as well as the right kind of proof of identity and citizenship. Normally, birth certificates or government-issued identification cards work well.

Keep in mind that getting a passport application processed can take all day. This is why having an early-morning appointment can deliver the best chance of getting the document by the end of the day. Additionally, making sure that a set of passport photographs is on hand is essential. That's because service centers aren't able to take these photographs. Just show up with documents, photos and fees to make it all work.

Recent homeland security requirements mandate that, when it comes to citizenship, the proper documentation will need to be supplied, though there are provisions made for secondary documentation when things like birth certificates or proof of citizenship can't be supplied immediately. The $60 fee usually is paid whenever background research on an expired passport must be conducted, by the way.

Passport by Mail

You can apply for a passport renewal by mail using Form DS-82 if you meet certain requirements and have more than two weeks before your departure. Your present passport cannot be damaged. It should have been issued to you within the past 15 years and when you were at least 16 years old. Your name must be the same as that in your present passport or you need to send documentation of the change such as a certified copy of your marriage license. If you do not meet these requirements, you cannot apply by mail.

Passport Acceptance Facility

For regular or expedited processing of a new passport, you need to take your completed application form DS-11 along with all supporting documents to the nearest passport acceptance facility. The Department of State's Bureau of Consular Affairs, Office of Passport Services authorizes many public libraries, post offices, clerks of court, and other state, county, township, and municipal government offices to receive passport applications on its behalf. There are over 9,000 such locations throughout the United States and U.S. territories.

Regional Passport Agency

Another location available to get a passport is any of the thirteen regional passport agencies. These agencies only attend travelers who need a passport in less than 2 weeks. If you need to get a passport in a hurry, this is a good option. Agencies are located in Boston, Chicago, Honolulu, Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington D.C. You can also find them in Aurora, Colorado and Norwalk, Connecticut.

You first need to call the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778 and set up an appointment at the passport agency that serves your region. You should neither arrive more than 15 minutes early nor be more than 15 minutes late. Be sure to take you completed, unsigned application, proof of US citizenship, current identification, two passport photos, proof of departure, and your appointment confirmation number.

Private Passport Expediter

In cases where you need to get a passport within a couple of weeks and are unable to travel to a regional passport agency, you can contract a private expediting service to obtain your travel document for you. You still need to present your application and documents to a passport agent but, instead of mailing them directly to the Office of Passport Services, you would send them to the expediter you have contracted and authorized to represent you.

US Passport Application

The most important step in order to obtain a new U.S. passport is submitting a properly filled out U.S. passport application. The government uses this to not only gather the required information about the applicant, but also to assess his 'intention' of traveling.

Depending on the form of request, there are various application forms available. The most common one, the 'DS-11' form, is available when applying for a new U.S. passport. This form should be used only when you are applying for the first time. A certain criterion has to be met in order to fall into the 'first-time applicant' category. 'DS-82' forms are used when one has to apply by mail, in cases of renewal of an existing passport. For an amendment or validation of the passport, application form 'DS-19' should be presented. It is used when there is a modification in the printed information of one's passport. In case of a lost or stolen passport, the form 'DS-64' is submitted, along with the DS-11 form. And to obtain a passport for a minor under the age of 14, the form 'DS-3053' along with the DS-11 application form is submitted.

The time taken to obtain a U.S. passport is normally two weeks. However, it may take a little longer during spring and summer, as they are the busiest periods. Also with the U.S. passport application, it is required for the applicant to submit proof of U.S. citizenship and identity, two passport-sized photos and the applicable fee to obtain a U.S. passport. The total fee charged is $97 for citizens above 16 years of age, and $82 for those who are under 16- a very low price indeed to obtain your right to travel.
